Dear Friends,
Twenty- five years ago in July I came to Oxford Academy as a young, eager and inexperienced educator. Over those twenty- five years I have grown professionally and had the great fortune of watching Oxford Academy transform itself into the wonderful school it is today.
Time is an amazing thing when you think about it. All the energy I had twenty-five years ago has been replaced by a more low-key and thoughtful approach to education, but the lack of boundless energy has helped me make the decision that I will retire from Oxford Academy in June 2010.
My memories of faculty, staff, students and board members will never leave me nor will the sense of pride over what has been accomplished. I feel a real debt of gratitude to those who have stood beside me, as twenty-five years is a long tenure for any headmaster.
Over the next two years I will work hard to increase our endowment and teach my successor Phil Cocchiola all I can about heading this great school. I have supreme confidence in Phil and I am delighted to have him follow me and bring the school to even greater heights.
Finally, I would like to give special thanks to Dick Brainerd and Doc Courthouts who have stood behind me for a significant portion of my years. I may be stepping down as headmaster, but I will never step far from the school that I was allowed to head for over a quarter of a century.
If any of you come to Westbrook in the next two years, please stop by. I would enjoy showing you the school and introducing you to Phil Cocchiola.
